Ubiquiti G6 Turret First Impressions

The G6 Turret is here!

Surprisingly Solid Build

This thing is surprisingly heavy and solid! From the promotional photos, I expected something cheap and lightweight, but in hand, it feels much more substantial—usually, it’s the opposite. It’s a turret camera, so hand-feel shouldn’t matter much, but it genuinely feels well-made.

Mounting Bracket Could Be Better

The single screw that both secures the turret’s position and attaches the camera to the bracket isn’t the most ergonomic solution. There’s definitely room for improvement in UI’s turret mounting design. That said, I absolutely hated the twist-mount system on the G5 Turret Ultra, so this is at least a step in the right direction.

Much-Improved Sensor

The new sensor is a big departure from the G5 Turret Ultra. With higher bitrate and resolution, the amount of detail it captures is impressive—details that would otherwise be lost. The colors are a bit more washed out and the image feels less cinematic, which is probably for the best in a surveillance context.

Unfortunate Aesthetic Choices

I really don’t like the look of the black mounting bracket paired with the white camera. It looks worse in person—like an Oreo. It cheapens the appearance of what is otherwise a beautifully designed device. If I end up keeping them long-term, I’ll likely paint the brackets white to match.

Before and after upgrade from G5 Turret Ultra

More thoughts to come as I live with this camera for a while.
